Narrative:
Air carrier X after landing on runway 5R at ind. Tower issued instructions to clear runway at next available and 'hold short of parallel.' we cleared the active but after a moments thought I realized that we could not hold short of the parallel and be certain that we were actually clear of the runway. We entered the parallel and contacted ground. The ground controller made an issue out of my taxi onto the parallel. (No opposite ground traffic yet). We exited the runway at D4 and then taxied on the parallel northeast to D3, there we turned left on D3 and held short of the runway. I nosed the aircraft up to and short of the active. It's a lot easier to see that I'm short of the runway this way rather than guessing while I'm inching up to the parallel. At the time we turned on to the parallel, opposite taxiing traffic was on B6 just entering D. As I said before this was a dual clearance that I was unable to comply with and I have no problem with what I did -- I got clear of the runway. Supplemental information from acn 203651: as we slowed down to exit on taxiway D-4 and hold short of taxiway 'D,' we couldn't do both. If we held short of 'D' taxiway, it looked like our tail would be over the line (aircraft is approximately 119 ft in length) and not clear of runway 5R.

Title: ACR X NON ADHERENCE TO ATC INSTRUCTIONS ENTERED TAXIWAY AFTER BEING INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT. PLTDEV.
Narrative: ACR X AFTER LNDG ON RWY 5R AT IND. TWR ISSUED INSTRUCTIONS TO CLR RWY AT NEXT AVAILABLE AND 'HOLD SHORT OF PARALLEL.' WE CLRED THE ACTIVE BUT AFTER A MOMENTS THOUGHT I REALIZED THAT WE COULD NOT HOLD SHORT OF THE PARALLEL AND BE CERTAIN THAT WE WERE ACTUALLY CLR OF THE RWY. WE ENTERED THE PARALLEL AND CONTACTED GND. THE GND CTLR MADE AN ISSUE OUT OF MY TAXI ONTO THE PARALLEL. (NO OPPOSITE GND TFC YET). WE EXITED THE RWY AT D4 AND THEN TAXIED ON THE PARALLEL NE TO D3, THERE WE TURNED L ON D3 AND HELD SHORT OF THE RWY. I NOSED THE ACFT UP TO AND SHORT OF THE ACTIVE. IT'S A LOT EASIER TO SEE THAT I'M SHORT OF THE RWY THIS WAY RATHER THAN GUESSING WHILE I'M INCHING UP TO THE PARALLEL. AT THE TIME WE TURNED ON TO THE PARALLEL, OPPOSITE TAXIING TFC WAS ON B6 JUST ENTERING D. AS I SAID BEFORE THIS WAS A DUAL CLRNC THAT I WAS UNABLE TO COMPLY WITH AND I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH WHAT I DID -- I GOT CLR OF THE RWY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 203651: AS WE SLOWED DOWN TO EXIT ON TAXIWAY D-4 AND HOLD SHORT OF TAXIWAY 'D,' WE COULDN'T DO BOTH. IF WE HELD SHORT OF 'D' TAXIWAY, IT LOOKED LIKE OUR TAIL WOULD BE OVER THE LINE (ACFT IS APPROX 119 FT IN LENGTH) AND NOT CLR OF RWY 5R.
