Narrative:
It was discovered shortly before scheduled departure time that 2 small 'peanut lights' in the cockpit, associated with the emergency lighting system, did not function. Local maintenance changed the bulbs. No help. (All other emergency lights functioned normally.) they then called our maintenance coordinator on the telephone and came back to the airplane with the paperwork to defer the item and conduct the flight. Meanwhile I read my MEL and interpreted its language to say that these lights were not required for daylight flight. (XXXX am and mostly clear en route.) upon arrival at destination I discovered that the coordinator had changed his mind about the legality of the deferral and was having the faulty light unit repaired. Although I remain convinced that the flight was conducted legally, I am submitting this report to cover all eventualities.

Title: ACR HAS 'PEANUT LIGHTS' INOP AT EMER LIGHTING SYS. MAINT COORDINATOR SAYS OK TO DEFER. PLT CHKS MEL AGREES FOR DAYLIGHT FLT.
Narrative: IT WAS DISCOVERED SHORTLY BEFORE SCHEDULED DEP TIME THAT 2 SMALL 'PEANUT LIGHTS' IN THE COCKPIT, ASSOCIATED WITH THE EMER LIGHTING SYS, DID NOT FUNCTION. LCL MAINT CHANGED THE BULBS. NO HELP. (ALL OTHER EMER LIGHTS FUNCTIONED NORMALLY.) THEY THEN CALLED OUR MAINT COORDINATOR ON THE TELEPHONE AND CAME BACK TO THE AIRPLANE WITH THE PAPERWORK TO DEFER THE ITEM AND CONDUCT THE FLT. MEANWHILE I READ MY MEL AND INTERPRETED ITS LANGUAGE TO SAY THAT THESE LIGHTS WERE NOT REQUIRED FOR DAYLIGHT FLT. (XXXX AM AND MOSTLY CLR ENRTE.) UPON ARR AT DEST I DISCOVERED THAT THE COORDINATOR HAD CHANGED HIS MIND ABOUT THE LEGALITY OF THE DEFERRAL AND WAS HAVING THE FAULTY LIGHT UNIT REPAIRED. ALTHOUGH I REMAIN CONVINCED THAT THE FLT WAS CONDUCTED LEGALLY, I AM SUBMITTING THIS RPT TO COVER ALL EVENTUALITIES.
