Narrative:
Flight was level at FL270 on a heading of 130 degree to intercept J87. As we started intercepting J87 I noticed a TCASII target on the vsi at approximately 6 mi and about 9 O'clock position. As we were completing the intercept, there was an aural TCASII message, 'climb, climb.' the TA/vsi showed a red arc below and up to about 1000 FPM up. The small green arc was at about 1000-1500 FPM climb. The target on the vsi was at approximately 9 O'clock, 2 mi, and 500 ft below us. I advised the first officer that we were going to climb and to call ATC. The target was never visually confirmed. We climbed smoothly at about 1200 FPM until at about FL275 the aural message 'monitor vertical speed' sounded. We leveled at about FL277 for a few seconds, then descended back to FL270. The houston center controller said he had traffic below us at FL250. Remainder of flight was normal.

AS WE WERE COMPLETING THE INTERCEPT, THERE WAS AN AURAL TCASII MESSAGE, 'CLB, CLB.' THE TA/VSI SHOWED A RED ARC BELOW AND UP TO ABOUT 1000 FPM UP. THE SMALL GREEN ARC WAS AT ABOUT 1000-1500 FPM CLB. THE TARGET ON THE VSI WAS AT APPROX 9 O'CLOCK, 2 MI, AND 500 FT BELOW US. I ADVISED THE FO THAT WE WERE GOING TO CLB AND TO CALL ATC. THE TARGET WAS NEVER VISUALLY CONFIRMED. WE CLBED SMOOTHLY AT ABOUT 1200 FPM UNTIL AT ABOUT FL275 THE AURAL MESSAGE 'MONITOR VERTICAL SPD' SOUNDED. WE LEVELED AT ABOUT FL277 FOR A FEW SECONDS, THEN DSNDED BACK TO FL270. THE HOUSTON CTR CTLR SAID HE HAD TFC BELOW US AT FL250. REMAINDER OF FLT WAS NORMAL.
