Narrative:
Got command from TCASII to descend immediately (target appeared suddenly as 'red' with no prior warning or advisory). We started a descent and notified ATC. ATC stated that he showed no traffic above us and that there was traffic at 3000 ft. The TCASII warning ceased and we quickly climbed back to 4000 ft. Total loss of altitude was approximately 300 ft. The warning was apparently false. No further problems occurred. Supplemental information from acn 206662: the TCASII was showing the conflict on our altitude at the 12 O'clock position and 3 mi. We deviated from assigned altitude for about 30 seconds.
