Narrative:
Had just turned eastbound on V-468 about 2-3 mi west of ykm. (I was at 16000). I had been talking with female voice, a male voice came on the air and said small aircraft descend immediately to 15000. Well I did. By the time I got level at 15000 and checked my position, I was by ykm. I asked for radar vectors direct pdx. I was given a heading around 070 degrees. I again asked for radar vectors direct to pdx. A new voice asked what my destination was. I said portland. I then was given headings to portland. I asked center for a phone number. I called center and found they were doing training. I was west of ykm at 16000 and heading east. There was a mdt east of ykm at 16000 heading west. I don't know if it was a training instructor, but the controller who gave me 15000 saw a bad situation developing and took action. Due to the timeliness, there was no conflict. It got a little tense. By overshooting ykm when I asked for vectors to portland, I believe the controller thought I said pullman and was giving me a vector to pullman, wa. I also was then given 14000. I asked again for vectors to pdx and another voice asked me what my destination was and then I got vectors to pdx when I confirmed that pdx was, in fact, where I wanted to go. Whoever it was at center who saw the conflict and gave me the new altitude sure earned his pay.

A NEW VOICE ASKED WHAT MY DEST WAS. I SAID PORTLAND. I THEN WAS GIVEN HDGS TO PORTLAND. I ASKED CTR FOR A PHONE NUMBER. I CALLED CTR AND FOUND THEY WERE DOING TRAINING. I WAS W OF YKM AT 16000 AND HDG E. THERE WAS A MDT E OF YKM AT 16000 HDG W. I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS A TRAINING INSTRUCTOR, BUT THE CTLR WHO GAVE ME 15000 SAW A BAD SITUATION DEVELOPING AND TOOK ACTION. DUE TO THE TIMELINESS, THERE WAS NO CONFLICT. IT GOT A LITTLE TENSE.
