Narrative:
Departed sus on a VFR equipment test flight (TCASII). Took off on runway 26 with a clearance to maintain runway heading to 1500 ft and then turn southwest. After takeoff tower advised of inbound traffic from the wsw. While trying to locate traffic visually, the TCASII started giving traffic advisories. We expedited the climb through the altitude of the inbound traffic. When clear of the traffic, approach/departure radar was contacted for advisories. We were advised that we had climbed through the edge of the TCA while distracted by the traffic conflict. Supplemental information from acn 208323: departed for a test flight. This flight was due to a modification to the TCASII departure off runway 26L. Traffic was given 10-11 O'clock. At 3500 ft, both crew members were looking for the traffic on the TCASII and visual. When contact with st louis approach was made, our aircraft had gone into the floor of the TCA at 4400 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MDT ON A VMC TEST FLT RESPONDED TO A TCASII ALERT WHILE NOT YET UNDER ATC CTL. THE CREW INADVERTENTLY CLBED INTO A TCA WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: DEPARTED SUS ON A VFR EQUIP TEST FLT (TCASII). TOOK OFF ON RWY 26 WITH A CLRNC TO MAINTAIN RWY HDG TO 1500 FT AND THEN TURN SW. AFTER TKOF TWR ADVISED OF INBOUND TFC FROM THE WSW. WHILE TRYING TO LOCATE TFC VISUALLY, THE TCASII STARTED GIVING TFC ADVISORIES. WE EXPEDITED THE CLB THROUGH THE ALT OF THE INBOUND TFC. WHEN CLR OF THE TFC, APCH/DEP RADAR WAS CONTACTED FOR ADVISORIES. WE WERE ADVISED THAT WE HAD CLBED THROUGH THE EDGE OF THE TCA WHILE DISTRACTED BY THE TFC CONFLICT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM ACN 208323: DEPARTED FOR A TEST FLT. THIS FLT WAS DUE TO A MODIFICATION TO THE TCASII DEP OFF RWY 26L. TFC WAS GIVEN 10-11 O'CLOCK. AT 3500 FT, BOTH CREW MEMBERS WERE LOOKING FOR THE TFC ON THE TCASII AND VISUAL. WHEN CONTACT WITH ST LOUIS APCH WAS MADE, OUR ACFT HAD GONE INTO THE FLOOR OF THE TCA AT 4400 FT.
