Narrative:
In preparation for a scheduled departure at lax we called for pushback from gate. We were given clearance to push. When we requested clearance to push we were ready. After the clearance was received some late bags arrived, delaying our push for about 2 mins. After the bags were secure we began our pushback. Ground control then jumped us and said we were not cleared to push. He gave us a little ground school over the radio and said, 'we needed to push exactly when clearance was given, etc.' he sounded very young. We let it slide without further conflict. We apologized and asked if he would like for us to pull back into the gate. He said no, to continue the push. I don't appreciate receiving ground school over the radio, particularly by the FAA. Flying is an art, not a science. Common sense is in short supply at the FAA.
