Narrative:
After takeoff it was discovered that the FMC present position was inaccurate to a degree which precluded extended overwater operation. We landed, realigned the IRU's and continued uneventfully to our destination. We suspect that we had entered the wrong present position coordinates, and have recommended to the company that enhanced procedures be put in place ensuring that errors of this nature be discovered prior to takeoff.
