Narrative:

I was flying a flight from fll-ewr. Pushback, taxi, and takeoff was normal. On climb out at around 800 ft AGL the captain and I heard a bang and then felt a shudder and vibration. I felt the aircraft yaw left. We then noticed the #1 engine (left) spooling down N1, N2, decreasing. At that time we realized the left engine had failed. I don't know the cause as of yet. We notified tower of our problem and we then entered a right downwind to 27R at fll. Performed all appropriate checklists, notified cabin crew and passengers of our problem and intentions to return for landing. We then landed and cleared the runway and had crash and rescue examine left engine. They found no external damage or fire. We then taxied to gate and deplaned passengers. I feel all the training we receive in factors of crew coordination, emergency procedures and aircraft systems helped this incident have a safe and favorable outcome.
