Narrative:

The flight was en route from ord to zrh. This was a widebody transport on an extended range overwater flight. Approximately over yul, the flight called and advised one of the engine driven generators had failed. At that time, I contacted maintenance and they suggested we land the aircraft short. I then referred to the aircraft operating manual and determined the flight could continue. I relayed this to the crew and the captain concurred. Just prior to the overwater portion, the flight again contacted me and advised the EICAS was displaying an intermittent status message on the APU oil quantity. I called maintenance and they advised there was a history of oil problems with the APU. They again suggested we land short. I contacted the flight and advised the crew of the history on the APU. At that point, I suggested landing at jfk. The captain felt comfortable to continue. We then discussed our options should the APU fail. Approximately 300 NM from that point, the APU failed. The captain declared an emergency and diverted to yyr. It is my opinion that the captain and I made sound decisions and operated the flight safely and legally.
