Narrative:
Our flight was cleared to track in on 25L localizer at lax. During the approach, ATC cleared us to turn right and intercept 24R localizer. I had 24R ILS set up on the secondary flight plan. I activated the secondary flight plan and asked the first officer to verify that the correct (24L localizer) frequency was in fact tuned. The frequency did not come up and the first officer 'hard tuned' 24R ILS on rad navigation page. We flew through the 24R localizer before it was turned and available. Approach noticed this and gave us a heading to reintercept 24R localizer. We were then told to side step to 24L. Both myself and the first officer were low time in this foreign made aircraft. After using the secondary flight plan on other approachs after this we noticed that switching to the second flight plan takes longer than expected to automatic turn. I believe that both pilots experience level contributed to this excursion. Also it was both pilots first time into lax and we did not expect 3 runway changes in less than 3 mins.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: HDG TRACK DEV ON APCH TO RWY AT LAX.
Narrative: OUR FLT WAS CLRED TO TRACK IN ON 25L LOC AT LAX. DURING THE APCH, ATC CLRED US TO TURN R AND INTERCEPT 24R LOC. I HAD 24R ILS SET UP ON THE SECONDARY FLT PLAN. I ACTIVATED THE SECONDARY FLT PLAN AND ASKED THE FO TO VERIFY THAT THE CORRECT (24L LOC) FREQ WAS IN FACT TUNED. THE FREQ DID NOT COME UP AND THE FO 'HARD TUNED' 24R ILS ON RAD NAV PAGE. WE FLEW THROUGH THE 24R LOC BEFORE IT WAS TURNED AND AVAILABLE. APCH NOTICED THIS AND GAVE US A HDG TO REINTERCEPT 24R LOC. WE WERE THEN TOLD TO SIDE STEP TO 24L. BOTH MYSELF AND THE FO WERE LOW TIME IN THIS FOREIGN MADE ACFT. AFTER USING THE SECONDARY FLT PLAN ON OTHER APCHS AFTER THIS WE NOTICED THAT SWITCHING TO THE SEC FLT PLAN TAKES LONGER THAN EXPECTED TO AUTO TURN. I BELIEVE THAT BOTH PLTS EXPERIENCE LEVEL CONTRIBUTED TO THIS EXCURSION. ALSO IT WAS BOTH PLTS FIRST TIME INTO LAX AND WE DID NOT EXPECT 3 RWY CHANGES IN LESS THAN 3 MINS.
