Narrative:
Flight was filed sna-dfw via the musel 5 departure ocn transition direct bza J-2 gbn...kdfw. Clearance delivery changed the clearance to musel 5 vectors to the sxc 061 then the sxc 061 to the sli 095 to the pdz 135 J-2 bza as filed. The flight was a special airport qualification with the line check airman in the right seat. The flight was 1 hour late. The line check airman loaded the route change in the FMS just prior to pushback using place bearing method to establish the sxc 061/sli 095 and the sli 095/pdz 135 fixes. The fix page using pdz and 135 degree radial as a down track fix function was used to establish the pdz 135 J-2 fix. In the rush to cut the delay, he missed the fact that the original track was ocn direct bza then J-2. Consequently, the down track fix was established north of J-2 on a line between ocn and bza. ZLA questioned our route and I, the line check airman, gave them our route. We were informed at that time we were north of our cleared route. I discovered my mistake and entered the proper data and the flight proceeded normally from that point. Contributing factors -- 1) rushing to make up time. 2) misreading the point on the flight plan which began J-2. Last min clearance change.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: HDG TRACK DEV IN A GROSS NAV ERROR INCIDENT.
Narrative: FLT WAS FILED SNA-DFW VIA THE MUSEL 5 DEP OCN TRANSITION DIRECT BZA J-2 GBN...KDFW. CLRNC DELIVERY CHANGED THE CLRNC TO MUSEL 5 VECTORS TO THE SXC 061 THEN THE SXC 061 TO THE SLI 095 TO THE PDZ 135 J-2 BZA AS FILED. THE FLT WAS A SPECIAL ARPT QUALIFICATION WITH THE LINE CHK AIRMAN IN THE R SEAT. THE FLT WAS 1 HR LATE. THE LINE CHK AIRMAN LOADED THE RTE CHANGE IN THE FMS JUST PRIOR TO PUSHBACK USING PLACE BEARING METHOD TO ESTABLISH THE SXC 061/SLI 095 AND THE SLI 095/PDZ 135 FIXES. THE FIX PAGE USING PDZ AND 135 DEG RADIAL AS A DOWN TRACK FIX FUNCTION WAS USED TO ESTABLISH THE PDZ 135 J-2 FIX. IN THE RUSH TO CUT THE DELAY, HE MISSED THE FACT THAT THE ORIGINAL TRACK WAS OCN DIRECT BZA THEN J-2. CONSEQUENTLY, THE DOWN TRACK FIX WAS ESTABLISHED N OF J-2 ON A LINE BTWN OCN AND BZA. ZLA QUESTIONED OUR RTE AND I, THE LINE CHK AIRMAN, GAVE THEM OUR RTE. WE WERE INFORMED AT THAT TIME WE WERE N OF OUR CLRED RTE. I DISCOVERED MY MISTAKE AND ENTERED THE PROPER DATA AND THE FLT PROCEEDED NORMALLY FROM THAT POINT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS -- 1) RUSHING TO MAKE UP TIME. 2) MISREADING THE POINT ON THE FLT PLAN WHICH BEGAN J-2. LAST MIN CLRNC CHANGE.
