Narrative:
My mother and I departed kendall-tamiami executive airport with the transponder code still set to the IFR code we had used when coming into the airport earlier that morning. I noticed this well after being clear of the miami TCA and if I recall right, the altitude encoding was not turned on even though we remained well below the TCA's floor. My mother was flying for her first time and I was determined to get back to mem as soon as possible. In my haste, I apparently turned the transponder on but failed to turn on the mode C and return the squawk code to 1200 until before reaching cruise flight.
