Narrative:
PIC checked ATIS which indicated runway 12 in use. Ground instructed taxi runway 30. Taxied from point #1 on attached diagram to point #2. After runup requested takeoff clearance. Tower advised hold departing traffic. Then advised 'cleared for takeoff.' PIC responded cleared for takeoff runway 30. Aircraft still located at point #2. Taxied onto runway 30 and departed. Tower advised that I had departed the wrong runway. What should have been done differently: 1) PIC should have questioned ATIS vs ground controller runway in use. 2) ground tower should have visually idented the aircraft on the ground. (There was little aircraft activity). 3) tower should have questioned PIC response -- cleared for takeoff runway 30.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN SMA PLT ALLEGEDLY TOOK OFF ON THE WRONG RWY.
Narrative: PIC CHKED ATIS WHICH INDICATED RWY 12 IN USE. GND INSTRUCTED TAXI RWY 30. TAXIED FROM POINT #1 ON ATTACHED DIAGRAM TO POINT #2. AFTER RUNUP REQUESTED TKOF CLRNC. TWR ADVISED HOLD DEPARTING TFC. THEN ADVISED 'CLRED FOR TKOF.' PIC RESPONDED CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 30. ACFT STILL LOCATED AT POINT #2. TAXIED ONTO RWY 30 AND DEPARTED. TWR ADVISED THAT I HAD DEPARTED THE WRONG RWY. WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE DIFFERENTLY: 1) PIC SHOULD HAVE QUESTIONED ATIS VS GND CTLR RWY IN USE. 2) GND TWR SHOULD HAVE VISUALLY IDENTED THE ACFT ON THE GND. (THERE WAS LITTLE ACFT ACTIVITY). 3) TWR SHOULD HAVE QUESTIONED PIC RESPONSE -- CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 30.
