Small aircraft X IFR flight plan syr rodan V84 beeps V501 V119 bfd V72 rod I77. Amended flight plan beeps intersection direct bfd V72 rod I77. Small aircraft X was handed off via automation. Bradford sector cleveland center accepted. I transferred communication to elmira approach. Aircraft entered elmira airspace. I assumed elmira took the handoff. Elmira issued a VFR code to aircraft upon contact. Later bradford sector looked for the aircraft. I issued an initial heading when able direct bradford. The pilot should have been able to receive bradford and proceed direct. The automated handoff does not specify which agency accepted the handoff. There are no procedures to verify amended routings or to verify automated handoffs.
