Narrative:
While flying the pawling arrival route at 4000 ft and in contact with ny approach, we were advised of traffic at our 2 O'clock position and 5 mi. We looked outside the aircraft for a visual sighting. Then we checked TCASII and it warned us of 'traffic.' the traffic appeared -300 ft and closing on our position. We still didn't have the aircraft in sight. We then received an RA to climb. I followed the RA to avoid conflict -- since we still didn't have the aircraft in sight. While performing the evasive maneuver, we gained a visual on the other aircraft to avoid a conflict I had climbed 700 ft. I then returned to 4000 ft. Center then questioned us to whether we had taken evasive maneuvers to avoid other traffic and we told him we had.

I FOLLOWED THE RA TO AVOID CONFLICT -- SINCE WE STILL DIDN'T HAVE THE ACFT IN SIGHT. WHILE PERFORMING THE EVASIVE MANEUVER, WE GAINED A VISUAL ON THE OTHER ACFT TO AVOID A CONFLICT I HAD CLBED 700 FT. I THEN RETURNED TO 4000 FT. CTR THEN QUESTIONED US TO WHETHER WE HAD TAKEN EVASIVE MANEUVERS TO AVOID OTHER TFC AND WE TOLD HIM WE HAD.
