Narrative:
While trying to circumnav thunderstorms on the arrival into bna we (crew) realized that we were at 10000 instead of the assigned 7000 ft 40 southeast of bna at the volls intersection. We elected to delay the descent because of concern for the severity of the storms. We also became so involved that we failed to advise ATC of our plan. Better coordination between our flight and ATC could have averted this situation. TCASII showed no traffic within 40 NM either below us or above.
