Narrative:

During descent, aircraft had received clearance to by-pass an area of WX to the north of our position. Although we were 20 mi as we cleared the south portion of the line as the aircraft passed about 90 degrees to the line we encountered instant severe turbulence. At that moment the radar showed light for 5 mi and no turbulence. In the min or so of turbulence, a flight attendant was badly injured. ATC was advised not to send anyone that route to prevent a recurrence, I will advise the attendants to take their seats and stop serving anytime I am passing within 40 mi of a large WX area. They cannot be responsible for their in-flight actions.
