Narrative:

While deviating around numerous thunderstorms we requested alternate routing around WX. We received such clearance and were handed off to next controller. We checked in with new controller and advised him of our new routing and altitude. He acknowledged but never heard or was passed on the new route. He later questioned our route of flight. Meanwhile, captain was hand- flying the aircraft and the altitude deviated to 500 ft low of assigned. Better handoff procedure would have eliminated route confusion and aircraft on autoplt would relieve workload during such demanding conditions.
