Narrative:

The student made a position report on the CTAF prior to intercepting the smo radial. (Approximately 1-2 mins prior). We heard no other reports on the CTAF. As we were turning to 312 degree heading, I saw an small aircraft become visible from under our left wing. I assisted the student's turn to climb us up and away from the small aircraft. At that point, the small aircraft must have seen us, because he pushed the nose over and dove away. He later took up a position level with us and a few hundred ft to our right rear. If time, workload, and equipment permits an advisory from coast TRACON as to other aircraft heading towards the sfra would be helpful.
