Narrative:
Center asked for our heading and the told us to maintain that heading. We were proceeding direct ALS after deviating for WX. After passing over ALS we turned 15 degrees left on course forgetting center's clearance to maintain present heading. Center then turned us 90 degrees right to 050 degrees and turned another air carrier flight 20 degrees right. We were turning at our maximum rate. Center said we had a 4 1/2 NM separation. The problem arose as we were given a clearance to maintain present heading 10-15 mins prior to reaching ALS VOR and the heading took us directly over the VOR. The clearance should have been more specific, i.e., maintain present heading after ALS, and should have included a TA. We should have clarified our clearance before turning direct on course.

Title: FLC OF ACR MLG ACFT FAILED TO MAINTAIN ASSIGNED HDG RESULTING IN LTSS. POTENTIAL CONFLICT.
Narrative: CTR ASKED FOR OUR HDG AND THE TOLD US TO MAINTAIN THAT HDG. WE WERE PROCEEDING DIRECT ALS AFTER DEVIATING FOR WX. AFTER PASSING OVER ALS WE TURNED 15 DEGS L ON COURSE FORGETTING CTR'S CLRNC TO MAINTAIN PRESENT HDG. CTR THEN TURNED US 90 DEGS R TO 050 DEGS AND TURNED ANOTHER ACR FLT 20 DEGS R. WE WERE TURNING AT OUR MAX RATE. CTR SAID WE HAD A 4 1/2 NM SEPARATION. THE PROBLEM AROSE AS WE WERE GIVEN A CLRNC TO MAINTAIN PRESENT HDG 10-15 MINS PRIOR TO REACHING ALS VOR AND THE HDG TOOK US DIRECTLY OVER THE VOR. THE CLRNC SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE SPECIFIC, I.E., MAINTAIN PRESENT HDG AFTER ALS, AND SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED A TA. WE SHOULD HAVE CLARIFIED OUR CLRNC BEFORE TURNING DIRECT ON COURSE.
