Narrative:

On climb out from sju international airport clearance was given by departure to climb to the appropriate VFR altitude and cleared on course direct st croix. While climbing through 7700 ft a TA was given to an air carrier mdt, 'traffic 12 O'clock opposite direction, 1 mi.' the mdt pilot replied 'in sight' and at the same time I saw the mdt at 12 O'clock at our altitude less than a mi. Both I and the mdt broke hard right and evaded collision by approximately 500 ft horizontal. The mdt commented 'that was too close' and I reprimanded the controller that her TA was not given in time to preclude a collision.
