Narrative:
Clearance from mke ground control was: 'taxi to runway 19R.' the shortest route from the terminal to the full length takeoff end of runway 19R, is north on taxiway golf, with a right turn on taxiway foxtrot. Upon reaching a point just north of taxiway gg on taxiway golf, and with the first officer off frequency getting final numbers from company, I switched to tower frequency. Almost immediately mke tower called us to inquire if we were past the hold short line, to which I responded: 'no, I did not see it.' subsequently mke tower instructed a single engine small aircraft that was on a 3/4 mi final for runway 25R to switch to runway 19L. This crew expected a hold short line for runway 19R to be on taxiway foxtrot, perpendicular to the runway. Instead, it apparently is located on taxiway golf just north of taxiway gg intersection. It is not well marked and does not have any signs to go along with it. By passing this line, we encroached on the approach plane for runway 25R, and not on runway 25R itself. This crew was not familiar with this part of the milwaukee airport, and the unique taxiway/runway layout created a trap. A sign accompanying the hold short line along with directives from ground control to hold short of the runway 25R approach plane would resolve any potential future conflict in this area of the airport.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MLG ACR CREW TAXIED PAST A 'HOLD' LINE THAT THE RPTR CLAIMS IS NOT CLRLY MARKED AND IS IN AN UNUSUAL POS.
Narrative: CLRNC FROM MKE GND CTL WAS: 'TAXI TO RWY 19R.' THE SHORTEST RTE FROM THE TERMINAL TO THE FULL LENGTH TKOF END OF RWY 19R, IS N ON TAXIWAY GOLF, WITH A R TURN ON TAXIWAY FOXTROT. UPON REACHING A POINT JUST N OF TAXIWAY GG ON TAXIWAY GOLF, AND WITH THE FO OFF FREQ GETTING FINAL NUMBERS FROM COMPANY, I SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY MKE TWR CALLED US TO INQUIRE IF WE WERE PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE, TO WHICH I RESPONDED: 'NO, I DID NOT SEE IT.' SUBSEQUENTLY MKE TWR INSTRUCTED A SINGLE ENG SMA THAT WAS ON A 3/4 MI FINAL FOR RWY 25R TO SWITCH TO RWY 19L. THIS CREW EXPECTED A HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 19R TO BE ON TAXIWAY FOXTROT, PERPENDICULAR TO THE RWY. INSTEAD, IT APPARENTLY IS LOCATED ON TAXIWAY GOLF JUST N OF TAXIWAY GG INTXN. IT IS NOT WELL MARKED AND DOES NOT HAVE ANY SIGNS TO GO ALONG WITH IT. BY PASSING THIS LINE, WE ENCROACHED ON THE APCH PLANE FOR RWY 25R, AND NOT ON RWY 25R ITSELF. THIS CREW WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THIS PART OF THE MILWAUKEE ARPT, AND THE UNIQUE TAXIWAY/RWY LAYOUT CREATED A TRAP. A SIGN ACCOMPANYING THE HOLD SHORT LINE ALONG WITH DIRECTIVES FROM GND CTL TO HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY 25R APCH PLANE WOULD RESOLVE ANY POTENTIAL FUTURE CONFLICT IN THIS AREA OF THE ARPT.
