Narrative:

Commercial pilot candidate flying in left seat. Landing at short turf field. Because of crosswind and necessary slip, instructor as PIC misjudged landing and allowed it to continue. Touchdown was normal but too far down runway and at slightly high airspeed. Both pilots applied brake, but airplane rolled approximately 6 ft into cornfield at end of runway. Minor paint damage only. Airplane checked by mechanic and flown out ok. A better understanding/coordination of student and pilot might have kept situation from happening. Instructor should encourage student to take assertive action (in this case, go around) if in student's judgement landing can't be made safely. In this case instructor's judgement of landing was faulty and student who was flying had a better 'feel' for how landing was proceeding but was influenced by instructor to continue.

Title: INSTRUCTOR WITH COMMERCIAL PLT CANDIDATE AT CTLS RUNS OFF END OF RWY.

Narrative: COMMERCIAL PLT CANDIDATE FLYING IN L SEAT. LNDG AT SHORT TURF FIELD. BECAUSE OF XWIND AND NECESSARY SLIP, INSTRUCTOR AS PIC MISJUDGED LNDG AND ALLOWED IT TO CONTINUE. TOUCHDOWN WAS NORMAL BUT TOO FAR DOWN RWY AND AT SLIGHTLY HIGH AIRSPD. BOTH PLTS APPLIED BRAKE, BUT AIRPLANE ROLLED APPROX 6 FT INTO CORNFIELD AT END OF RWY. MINOR PAINT DAMAGE ONLY. AIRPLANE CHKED BY MECH AND FLOWN OUT OK. A BETTER UNDERSTANDING/COORD OF STUDENT AND PLT MIGHT HAVE KEPT SITUATION FROM HAPPENING. INSTRUCTOR SHOULD ENCOURAGE STUDENT TO TAKE ASSERTIVE ACTION (IN THIS CASE, GAR) IF IN STUDENT'S JUDGEMENT LNDG CAN'T BE MADE SAFELY. IN THIS CASE INSTRUCTOR'S JUDGEMENT OF LNDG WAS FAULTY AND STUDENT WHO WAS FLYING HAD A BETTER 'FEEL' FOR HOW LNDG WAS PROCEEDING BUT WAS INFLUENCED BY INSTRUCTOR TO CONTINUE.
