Narrative:

Descending into the cho area, ZDC held me at 4000 ft within 6 mi of airport (641 MSL). I was told traffic was an small transport on a right base for runway 3. I cancelled my IFR clearance and was told to contact cho tower. After calling tower and reporting 'just inside azalea park,' I was told I was '#2' behind air carrier small transport aircraft on a right base and to report a 3 mi final. I continued to look and scan for the small transport aircraft but never was able to make visual contact with the #1 landing traffic on a 'right base.' as I was reporting a '3 mi final' I suddenly saw the small transport aircraft pass straight below me about 100 ft. I told tower what had happened and 'she' said 'didn't I understand I was #2?' I responded that yes I understood I was #2 but the traffic was behind me. How could I see it? The crew of the air carrier responded that 'they never saw me!' how frightening! Cho needs radar in my opinion.

Title: DURING VFR FINAL APCH, SMA ACFT HAD NMAC WITH AN ACR SMT ACFT ALSO ON FINAL FOR THE SAME RWY.

Narrative: DSNDING INTO THE CHO AREA, ZDC HELD ME AT 4000 FT WITHIN 6 MI OF ARPT (641 MSL). I WAS TOLD TFC WAS AN SMT ON A R BASE FOR RWY 3. I CANCELLED MY IFR CLRNC AND WAS TOLD TO CONTACT CHO TWR. AFTER CALLING TWR AND RPTING 'JUST INSIDE AZALEA PARK,' I WAS TOLD I WAS '#2' BEHIND ACR SMT ACFT ON A R BASE AND TO RPT A 3 MI FINAL. I CONTINUED TO LOOK AND SCAN FOR THE SMT ACFT BUT NEVER WAS ABLE TO MAKE VISUAL CONTACT WITH THE #1 LNDG TFC ON A 'R BASE.' AS I WAS RPTING A '3 MI FINAL' I SUDDENLY SAW THE SMT ACFT PASS STRAIGHT BELOW ME ABOUT 100 FT. I TOLD TWR WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND 'SHE' SAID 'DIDN'T I UNDERSTAND I WAS #2?' I RESPONDED THAT YES I UNDERSTOOD I WAS #2 BUT THE TFC WAS BEHIND ME. HOW COULD I SEE IT? THE CREW OF THE ACR RESPONDED THAT 'THEY NEVER SAW ME!' HOW FRIGHTENING! CHO NEEDS RADAR IN MY OPINION.
