Narrative:

Miscom. I requested orange departure (330 degree heading) after departure and I heard the indication taxi turn hotel at the end of 19R but next indication was position and hold. I understood that after departure turn right at hotel (this meaning was a quick right turn over hotel) immediately and I departed and turned at hotel and assumed the tower was allowing me to avoid wake turbulence from a jet arrival. After the departure switched to john wayne advisories and received no indication of a problem on departure and continued en route to corona then returned with still no indication of any problem earlier. I received the troubling news from an instructor where I fly out of and did not realize that there was a problem with my departure. Corrective actions -- need to confirm communication with instructions received from the tower or the controling agency I am communicating with. I realize that I cannot interpret what my instructions are, but I need to completely understand them and confirm them at all times. I further plan to spend time with an instructor to improve on my communication skills for future flying.

I UNDERSTOOD THAT AFTER DEP TURN R AT HOTEL (THIS MEANING WAS A QUICK R TURN OVER HOTEL) IMMEDIATELY AND I DEPARTED AND TURNED AT HOTEL AND ASSUMED THE TWR WAS ALLOWING ME TO AVOID WAKE TURB FROM A JET ARR. AFTER THE DEP SWITCHED TO JOHN WAYNE ADVISORIES AND RECEIVED NO INDICATION OF A PROBLEM ON DEP AND CONTINUED ENRTE TO CORONA THEN RETURNED WITH STILL NO INDICATION OF ANY PROBLEM EARLIER. I RECEIVED THE TROUBLING NEWS FROM AN INSTRUCTOR WHERE I FLY OUT OF AND DID NOT REALIZE THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH MY DEP. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS -- NEED TO CONFIRM COM WITH INSTRUCTIONS RECEIVED FROM THE TWR OR THE CTLING AGENCY I AM COMMUNICATING WITH. I REALIZE THAT I CANNOT INTERPRET WHAT MY INSTRUCTIONS ARE, BUT I NEED TO COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND THEM AND CONFIRM THEM AT ALL TIMES. I FURTHER PLAN TO SPEND TIME WITH AN INSTRUCTOR TO IMPROVE ON MY COM SKILLS FOR FUTURE FLYING.
