Narrative:

Taxi back after landing instructions given (while first officer on secondary radio checking gate information) were misunderstood as non standard for heavy traffic operations but sometimes used in off peak times. As aircraft turned off parallel onto taxiway which had opposite direction traffic, no visible due to bridge, the instructions were questioned, but it was too late, another aircraft had entered from the opposite direction and a tug was required to push back and deconflict the 2 aircraft. Solution is to question non standard clrncs, especially when entering a taxiway or area that is not entirely visible, even more so when one of the crew members has been off frequency in the performance of his duties. Another incident that would probably not have happened on a 3 person crewed aircraft so we 2 person crews must be especially vigilant. Supplemental information from acn 221965. However, I regret to have to say the main factor on my part was complacency. It was the end of a 3 day trip on a beautiful afternoon. We were on the ground with no other apparent traffic on the airport with clearance to our gate. What could go wrong?
