Air Traffic Incident | Pilot Deviation |
Narrative:
Cruise at FL370 when TCASII indicated a red RA 1 O'clock and 1 mi at -600 ft. A 'climb, climb, climb' corrective advisory message occurred and a climb was initiated to 37500 ft. TCASII then indicated traffic at 7 O'clock and - 5600 ft. Shortly after this an air carrier flight was visually sighted, 9 O'clock and low. Tokyo control was asked for air carrier's altitude and stated air carrier was at FL330. A small build up was encountered at the same time that the TCASII occurred. The first officer was flying and followed the TCASII instructions. Tokyo did not question the altitude deviation to 37500 ft. I believe the build up had some effect on the TCASII, causing a misreading from the air carrier flight. Ps, we had no trouble staying awake for this all night flight to hnl. Supplemental information from acn 222391. The first officer disconnected the autoplt and started to climb to 37500. The TCASII then switched and showed the traffic at our 6 O'clock and approximately 1/2 mi and indicated 5600 ft below our altitude. TCASII did not give us a 'clear of conflict' verbal order after the incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A WDB ACR HAD A FALSE TCASII ALERT NEAR JAPAN. THERE WAS ANOTHER ACFT IN THE VICINITY, 4000 FT BELOW. THERE WERE TSTMS IN THE AREA ALSO.
Narrative: CRUISE AT FL370 WHEN TCASII INDICATED A RED RA 1 O'CLOCK AND 1 MI AT -600 FT. A 'CLB, CLB, CLB' CORRECTIVE ADVISORY MESSAGE OCCURRED AND A CLB WAS INITIATED TO 37500 FT. TCASII THEN INDICATED TFC AT 7 O'CLOCK AND - 5600 FT. SHORTLY AFTER THIS AN ACR FLT WAS VISUALLY SIGHTED, 9 O'CLOCK AND LOW. TOKYO CTL WAS ASKED FOR ACR'S ALT AND STATED ACR WAS AT FL330. A SMALL BUILD UP WAS ENCOUNTERED AT THE SAME TIME THAT THE TCASII OCCURRED. THE FO WAS FLYING AND FOLLOWED THE TCASII INSTRUCTIONS. TOKYO DID NOT QUESTION THE ALTDEV TO 37500 FT. I BELIEVE THE BUILD UP HAD SOME EFFECT ON THE TCASII, CAUSING A MISREADING FROM THE ACR FLT. PS, WE HAD NO TROUBLE STAYING AWAKE FOR THIS ALL NIGHT FLT TO HNL. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 222391. THE FO DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND STARTED TO CLB TO 37500. THE TCASII THEN SWITCHED AND SHOWED THE TFC AT OUR 6 O'CLOCK AND APPROX 1/2 MI AND INDICATED 5600 FT BELOW OUR ALT. TCASII DID NOT GIVE US A 'CLR OF CONFLICT' VERBAL ORDER AFTER THE INCIDENT.
