Narrative:

Air carrier flight #1 operating from dfw-abq, departed runway 35L at dfw on a 345 degree heading with clearance to 10000 ft on the worth- 5 departure. Frequency 124.25 ahead of us (dfw-ont) to level at 7000 ft. #2 replied 'we are passing 15000 ft.' at that moment at approximately 6500 ft and climbing, we saw an air carrier medium large transport head on. At 6800 ft we started a left turn and the other aircraft turned to their left also. We had caught the controller mistake and were in the process of leveling out when the medium large transport came into view. I believe some of confusion may be due to the fact that our company assigns similar flight numbers to flts that depart or arrive at the same time. This was brought to our safety of flight office attention when we discussed this incident with them.

Narrative: ACR FLT #1 OPERATING FROM DFW-ABQ, DEPARTED RWY 35L AT DFW ON A 345 DEG HDG WITH CLRNC TO 10000 FT ON THE WORTH- 5 DEP. FREQ 124.25 AHEAD OF US (DFW-ONT) TO LEVEL AT 7000 FT. #2 REPLIED 'WE ARE PASSING 15000 FT.' AT THAT MOMENT AT APPROX 6500 FT AND CLBING, WE SAW AN ACR MLG HEAD ON. AT 6800 FT WE STARTED A L TURN AND THE OTHER ACFT TURNED TO THEIR L ALSO. WE HAD CAUGHT THE CTLR MISTAKE AND WERE IN THE PROCESS OF LEVELING OUT WHEN THE MLG CAME INTO VIEW.
