Narrative:
Cleared via kennedy 6 SID with breezy point climb. When I briefed the departure I read the canarsie climb. The first officer didn't catch this. On climb out over cri VOR I asked first officer to verify the outbound radial was the 176. He said 'yes the 176 radial.' a few seconds later he was mumbling things like 'what... Oh I see you're just... Down the middle... Correcting.' I was flying to intercept the 176 radial when I should have been going after the 223 radial. I said 'what's wrong.' more mumbling and thinking half out loud from him. I say 'what are you talking about' to which he says 'oh no its okay.' 'okay' I say. Mins later ATC pointed out our need to correct. At first I was annoyed at my partner for not speaking up when he saw something wrong. He's fairly new and doesn't have the confidence many senior first officer's have. Later, however, I became annoyed at myself for not being more assertive and finding out exactly what my partner was thinking.
