Narrative:
When slowing airplane to exit active runway the nosewheel steering failed causing the airplane to veer unctlably to the left. I applied differential power and braking to guide the aircraft through the taxiway lights across the grass safety zone and onto the taxiway for 9L-27R where I stopped the plane. Then used differential power to taxi to the ramp. The problem was caused by a faulty steering amplifier. I'm not sure that anything could be done to prevent this, but the brakes were far more effective in stopping and controling the airplane than were the reversers, in this situation, due to the differential thrust created by the reversers.
