Narrative:
In a small aircraft my student pilot and I were ready to make our radio call and taxi onto runway 20 for sbound departure. We noticed a helicopter on final, making a go around and entering left downwind for runway 2 which pilot announced, 'entering downwind.' my student pilot then announced on the radio, 'twin oaks traffic, small aircraft, departing runway 20, sbound.' expecting the helicopter to extend on left downwind to allow for our departure, we departed runway 20. Helicopter pilot then abruptly turned base and final.' this action produced a potential head-on collision conflict. Our evasive action produced an estimated miss of approximately 800 ft vertical, 1000 ft horizontal. The helicopter pilot (based at 7s3), believes his ego is more important than aviation safety and courtesy. Due to this airport's unique landing and takeoff stipulations, aviation alertness, common sense and courtesy are especially important.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA DEPARTING AT FIELD WITH OPPOSITE DIRECTION LNDGS AND TKOFS, HAS NMAC WITH LNDG TFC.
Narrative: IN A SMA MY STUDENT PLT AND I WERE READY TO MAKE OUR RADIO CALL AND TAXI ONTO RWY 20 FOR SBOUND DEP. WE NOTICED A HELI ON FINAL, MAKING A GAR AND ENTERING L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 2 WHICH PLT ANNOUNCED, 'ENTERING DOWNWIND.' MY STUDENT PLT THEN ANNOUNCED ON THE RADIO, 'TWIN OAKS TFC, SMA, DEPARTING RWY 20, SBOUND.' EXPECTING THE HELI TO EXTEND ON L DOWNWIND TO ALLOW FOR OUR DEP, WE DEPARTED RWY 20. HELI PLT THEN ABRUPTLY TURNED BASE AND FINAL.' THIS ACTION PRODUCED A POTENTIAL HEAD-ON COLLISION CONFLICT. OUR EVASIVE ACTION PRODUCED AN ESTIMATED MISS OF APPROX 800 FT VERT, 1000 FT HORIZ. THE HELI PLT (BASED AT 7S3), BELIEVES HIS EGO IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN AVIATION SAFETY AND COURTESY. DUE TO THIS ARPT'S UNIQUE LNDG AND TKOF STIPULATIONS, AVIATION ALERTNESS, COMMON SENSE AND COURTESY ARE ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT.
