Narrative:
Departing small transport reported large chunks of asphalt on runway. The tower has received several reports of this unsafe condition. The runway and ramp area is in need of resurfacing. Airport authority removes chunks and will 'quick patch' when able. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states that runway condition still exists. He said that only runway 16/34 has the problem. The other runway is not used much, and as a result, they have not had reports from pilots. Runway 16/34 is made up or large asphalt squares. The asphalt breaking up is at the edge of the squares. Airport manager aware of problem and will spot patch when the hole becomes too large. Reporter said that the chunks of asphalt range from small rock size to larger chunks up to about 8 inches across. He also said that the entire runway is the same condition. To his knowledge, there are no plans by the airport to resurface the runway. This is an ongoing problem that occurs frequently. It is not an isolated situation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DEPARTING SMT RPTS LARGE CHUNKS OF ASPHALT ON RWY.
Narrative: DEPARTING SMT RPTED LARGE CHUNKS OF ASPHALT ON RWY. THE TWR HAS RECEIVED SEVERAL RPTS OF THIS UNSAFE CONDITION. THE RWY AND RAMP AREA IS IN NEED OF RESURFACING. ARPT AUTHORITY REMOVES CHUNKS AND WILL 'QUICK PATCH' WHEN ABLE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THAT RWY CONDITION STILL EXISTS. HE SAID THAT ONLY RWY 16/34 HAS THE PROB. THE OTHER RWY IS NOT USED MUCH, AND AS A RESULT, THEY HAVE NOT HAD RPTS FROM PLTS. RWY 16/34 IS MADE UP OR LARGE ASPHALT SQUARES. THE ASPHALT BREAKING UP IS AT THE EDGE OF THE SQUARES. ARPT MGR AWARE OF PROB AND WILL SPOT PATCH WHEN THE HOLE BECOMES TOO LARGE. RPTR SAID THAT THE CHUNKS OF ASPHALT RANGE FROM SMALL ROCK SIZE TO LARGER CHUNKS UP TO ABOUT 8 INCHES ACROSS. HE ALSO SAID THAT THE ENTIRE RWY IS THE SAME CONDITION. TO HIS KNOWLEDGE, THERE ARE NO PLANS BY THE ARPT TO RESURFACE THE RWY. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROB THAT OCCURS FREQUENTLY. IT IS NOT AN ISOLATED SIT.
