Narrative:
We were on STAR IPT1 to ewr with clearance to cross sweet at 7000. ATC advised of þtfc 12 O'clock, 10 mi VFR altitude readout of 8600.' I asked ATC to keep us advised of traffic. ATC advised us of traffic 12 O'clock, 3 mi VFR altitude readout of 8500.' we asked for vectors around traffic, and stopped our descent at 9000 ft. At that time we got a TCASII RA of þclb, climb.' captain (PF) initiated climb and I advised ATC of our action. I saw the aircraft pass under us at 700 ft and 1 mi to the right. At 9800 ft TCASII announced þclr of conflict.' we leveled off at 10000 ft and advised ATC. ATC reclred us to 9000 ft and to hold at penns intersection. The rest of the flight segment continued without incident. I believe this situation could have been avoided if ATC would have amended our altitude or given us a vector around the traffic.

Title: MLG HAS TCASII RA FOR VFR TFC. RESPONDS.
Narrative: WE WERE ON STAR IPT1 TO EWR WITH CLRNC TO CROSS SWEET AT 7000. ATC ADVISED OF þTFC 12 O'CLOCK, 10 MI VFR ALT READOUT OF 8600.' I ASKED ATC TO KEEP US ADVISED OF TFC. ATC ADVISED US OF TFC 12 O'CLOCK, 3 MI VFR ALT READOUT OF 8500.' WE ASKED FOR VECTORS AROUND TFC, AND STOPPED OUR DSCNT AT 9000 FT. AT THAT TIME WE GOT A TCASII RA OF þCLB, CLB.' CAPT (PF) INITIATED CLB AND I ADVISED ATC OF OUR ACTION. I SAW THE ACFT PASS UNDER US AT 700 FT AND 1 MI TO THE R. AT 9800 FT TCASII ANNOUNCED þCLR OF CONFLICT.' WE LEVELED OFF AT 10000 FT AND ADVISED ATC. ATC RECLRED US TO 9000 FT AND TO HOLD AT PENNS INTXN. THE REST OF THE FLT SEGMENT CONTINUED WITHOUT INCIDENT. I BELIEVE THIS SIT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF ATC WOULD HAVE AMENDED OUR ALT OR GIVEN US A VECTOR AROUND THE TFC.
