Narrative:
Air carrier X takeoff runway 16R slc clear VFR. Deck angle 18 degrees with high rate of climb, cleared to 8000 ft. At about 5400 ft I saw red/white small aircraft at 1 O'clock, right to left. We pushed over with negative G's on aircraft and passed 200-300 ft below. The tower said yes, the small aircraft was at 6000 ft and he had us both in sight. I believe the small aircraft was cleared eastbound directly over the tower at midfield. The local controller did not call out the traffic and we were looking directly into the sun. The controller's error was overestimating the runway used and rate of climb of a light large transport on a cold day. A simple traffic call would have helped. We were very lucky as the small aircraft was behind the windshield post most of the time and/or in the sun.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR X HAD NMAC LTSS FROM SMA IN TCA ATA. EVASIVE ACTION TAKEN DSCNT. SYS ERROR.
Narrative: ACR X TKOF RWY 16R SLC CLR VFR. DECK ANGLE 18 DEGS WITH HIGH RATE OF CLB, CLRED TO 8000 FT. AT ABOUT 5400 FT I SAW RED/WHITE SMA AT 1 O'CLOCK, R TO L. WE PUSHED OVER WITH NEGATIVE G'S ON ACFT AND PASSED 200-300 FT BELOW. THE TWR SAID YES, THE SMA WAS AT 6000 FT AND HE HAD US BOTH IN SIGHT. I BELIEVE THE SMA WAS CLRED EBOUND DIRECTLY OVER THE TWR AT MIDFIELD. THE LCL CTLR DID NOT CALL OUT THE TFC AND WE WERE LOOKING DIRECTLY INTO THE SUN. THE CTLR'S ERROR WAS OVERESTIMATING THE RWY USED AND RATE OF CLB OF A LIGHT LGT ON A COLD DAY. A SIMPLE TFC CALL WOULD HAVE HELPED. WE WERE VERY LUCKY AS THE SMA WAS BEHIND THE WINDSHIELD POST MOST OF THE TIME AND/OR IN THE SUN.
