Narrative:
After landing runway 22 at night, taxied back to gate via taxiway D. Next day, repeated (land 22, taxi back via D). Ground instructed us to taxi in on left side of C, past an opposite direction jet to our right. Captain wondered aloud why we couldn't use D like previous night. I radioed ground that we would use D. They said roger. I then noticed runway hold painted markings, saw the approach lights adjoining D, and told captain 'that's a runway, that's why' (referring to why they didn't clear us via D in the first place). Captain made hard right turn onto C. Believe our left wing was well over hold short line on D. I think this is a dangerous situation as the markings are not obvious (3-MAN crew didn't catch it on previous night). Commercial airfield diagram does not make it apparent that taxiway D encroaches on runway 22 approach path, especially in dark cockpit.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR LGT FAILED TO SEE A HOLD SHORT SIGN AT NIGHT THAT WAS PAINTED ON THE TAXIWAY. THEY WERE SURPRISED TO SEE IT THE NEXT MORNING. GND CTL CLRED THE ACFT ACROSS THE HOLD SIGN BOTH TIMES. THERE ARE NO VERT SIGNS.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG RWY 22 AT NIGHT, TAXIED BACK TO GATE VIA TAXIWAY D. NEXT DAY, REPEATED (LAND 22, TAXI BACK VIA D). GND INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI IN ON L SIDE OF C, PAST AN OPPOSITE DIRECTION JET TO OUR R. CAPT WONDERED ALOUD WHY WE COULDN'T USE D LIKE PREVIOUS NIGHT. I RADIOED GND THAT WE WOULD USE D. THEY SAID ROGER. I THEN NOTICED RWY HOLD PAINTED MARKINGS, SAW THE APCH LIGHTS ADJOINING D, AND TOLD CAPT 'THAT'S A RWY, THAT'S WHY' (REFERRING TO WHY THEY DIDN'T CLR US VIA D IN THE FIRST PLACE). CAPT MADE HARD R TURN ONTO C. BELIEVE OUR L WING WAS WELL OVER HOLD SHORT LINE ON D. I THINK THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AS THE MARKINGS ARE NOT OBVIOUS (3-MAN CREW DIDN'T CATCH IT ON PREVIOUS NIGHT). COMMERCIAL AIRFIELD DIAGRAM DOES NOT MAKE IT APPARENT THAT TAXIWAY D ENCROACHES ON RWY 22 APCH PATH, ESPECIALLY IN DARK COCKPIT.
