Narrative:
Normal en route descent from the west into dtw airport. Copilot flying, being vectored to visual approach to dtw airport landing runway 3L. Copilot normally goes into 'hyper' mode on all approachs, this one was no exception. He kept pushing me to get 'visual approach' clearance and lower altitude. I didn't have the airport, however he claimed to. Things got very busy with checklists, gear/flap changes following visual approach clearance received. As he made his base leg turn, I realized this was not dtw airport, but a regional airport to the west -- willow grove. Dtw approach saw it also and gave us a climbing vector back to dtw airport. I allowed my copilot to dominate the situation with his hyperness, degrading both our perceptions. I should have realized he had the wrong airport due to his early confign to landing phase. I told him to allow controllers to do their job and not 'push' excessively to be turned loose, until both pilots agree to situation as being proper and safe.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FO OF ACR MLG ACFT STARTED A VISUAL APCH TO THE WRONG ARPT AFTER ADVISING THE CAPT AND ATC THAT HE HAD THE ARPT IN SIGHT AND CANCELING IFR.
Narrative: NORMAL ENRTE DSCNT FROM THE W INTO DTW ARPT. COPLT FLYING, BEING VECTORED TO VISUAL APCH TO DTW ARPT LNDG RWY 3L. COPLT NORMALLY GOES INTO 'HYPER' MODE ON ALL APCHS, THIS ONE WAS NO EXCEPTION. HE KEPT PUSHING ME TO GET 'VISUAL APCH' CLRNC AND LOWER ALT. I DIDN'T HAVE THE ARPT, HOWEVER HE CLAIMED TO. THINGS GOT VERY BUSY WITH CHKLISTS, GEAR/FLAP CHANGES FOLLOWING VISUAL APCH CLRNC RECEIVED. AS HE MADE HIS BASE LEG TURN, I REALIZED THIS WAS NOT DTW ARPT, BUT A REGIONAL ARPT TO THE W -- WILLOW GROVE. DTW APCH SAW IT ALSO AND GAVE US A CLBING VECTOR BACK TO DTW ARPT. I ALLOWED MY COPLT TO DOMINATE THE SIT WITH HIS HYPERNESS, DEGRADING BOTH OUR PERCEPTIONS. I SHOULD HAVE REALIZED HE HAD THE WRONG ARPT DUE TO HIS EARLY CONFIGN TO LNDG PHASE. I TOLD HIM TO ALLOW CTLRS TO DO THEIR JOB AND NOT 'PUSH' EXCESSIVELY TO BE TURNED LOOSE, UNTIL BOTH PLTS AGREE TO SIT AS BEING PROPER AND SAFE.
