Narrative:
On the night of jan/wed/93, at approximately XA25, flight was cleared for a visual approach to runway 21R at dtw. The aircraft to follow and the airport was in sight when we were handed off to dtw tower and cleared to land. On approximately a 5-7 mi final, our TCASII issued a traffic warning. As PNF, I began to scan to locate the traffic. The warning became an RA within approximately 3 seconds. The captain complied with the RA and descended the required 1500 FPM. The TCASII positioned the traffic 100 ft above and approximately 1/2 mi to our left. The tower controller then gave us a right turn to reintercept the localizer which the captain interpreted to be a right 360 degree turn to separate from traffic, before the right turn could be confirmed by the controller we were revectored for the visual approach to 21R without further incident. Factors: congested airspace. Congested radio frequency. TCASII response to traffic in a congested area. Compliance to TCASII RA in visual conditions without aircraft in sight. Multiple visual approach clrncs to parallel runways.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF ACR MDT ACFT TOOK EVASIVE ACTION DURING A VISUAL APCH IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII RA.
Narrative: ON THE NIGHT OF JAN/WED/93, AT APPROX XA25, FLT WAS CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 21R AT DTW. THE ACFT TO FOLLOW AND THE ARPT WAS IN SIGHT WHEN WE WERE HANDED OFF TO DTW TWR AND CLRED TO LAND. ON APPROX A 5-7 MI FINAL, OUR TCASII ISSUED A TFC WARNING. AS PNF, I BEGAN TO SCAN TO LOCATE THE TFC. THE WARNING BECAME AN RA WITHIN APPROX 3 SECONDS. THE CAPT COMPLIED WITH THE RA AND DSNDED THE REQUIRED 1500 FPM. THE TCASII POSITIONED THE TFC 100 FT ABOVE AND APPROX 1/2 MI TO OUR L. THE TWR CTLR THEN GAVE US A R TURN TO REINTERCEPT THE LOC WHICH THE CAPT INTERPRETED TO BE A R 360 DEG TURN TO SEPARATE FROM TFC, BEFORE THE R TURN COULD BE CONFIRMED BY THE CTLR WE WERE REVECTORED FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO 21R WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. FACTORS: CONGESTED AIRSPACE. CONGESTED RADIO FREQ. TCASII RESPONSE TO TFC IN A CONGESTED AREA. COMPLIANCE TO TCASII RA IN VISUAL CONDITIONS WITHOUT ACFT IN SIGHT. MULTIPLE VISUAL APCH CLRNCS TO PARALLEL RWYS.
