Narrative:
An light transport with call sign X was on a training mission. Our route of flight from vad was radar vectors direct tlh direct. Our destination was ultimately W-470 D/east and nova airspace. At FL270, ZJX approved our transponder to standby for our mission, then just south of tlh VOR terminated radar service. After entering W-470, we climbed to FL280 while talking to range control. Our mission profile called for us to cross an airway en route to our ip. We did not receive TA's from range control or ZJX on guard frequency. We were unaware that ZJX had to descend an airliner, which we had a visual on, that was at our altitude. We were operating in VMC conditions. In the future, we will contact ARTCC before exiting special use airspace regardless of what our clearance is understood to be.
