Narrative:
Due to poor marking and the first officer's directions, we inadvertently crossed the approach end of a parallel runway. Better markings for complex airport diagrams including txwys, holding areas, and runway hold lines would be appreciated. Awareness cannot be stressed enough. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that when taxiing south on the west ramp at mdw, it is difficult to tell when you are approaching runway 4L. He thinks there may be a sign further towards the end of the runway.
