Narrative:
Flight departed montgomery field, san diego on day, VFR flight to bullhead city, az. After takeoff myf tower asked me to recycle transponder due to lack of signal. Aircraft had a history of transponder problems due to DME interference. I climbed to 2500 ft and called gillespie tower for air traffic area clearance. After clearing air traffic area I started climb to 'planned' 3500 ft to stay clear of TCA and at the same time tried to get the transponder working. By recycling switches and turning off DME I got the transponder reply light to work again. During the repair process, I inadvertently allowed aircraft to climb to 4000 ft, 200 ft into TCA base altitude. I called approach for clearance into TCA and was told that I was already in but that I was cleared into the TCA. For my part, I know better than to allow minor equipment problems to interfere with the safe operation of the flight. A problem transponder is a minor equipment problem. Contributing factor: the vast load of my experience level is in the very controled IFR flight of airline operations. My current VFR experience is limited.

Title: PLT OF SMA ACFT INADVERTENTLY PENETRATED A TCA DUE ACFT EQUIP PROB DISTR.
Narrative: FLT DEPARTED MONTGOMERY FIELD, SAN DIEGO ON DAY, VFR FLT TO BULLHEAD CITY, AZ. AFTER TKOF MYF TWR ASKED ME TO RECYCLE XPONDER DUE TO LACK OF SIGNAL. ACFT HAD A HISTORY OF XPONDER PROBS DUE TO DME INTERFERENCE. I CLBED TO 2500 FT AND CALLED GILLESPIE TWR FOR ATA CLRNC. AFTER CLRING ATA I STARTED CLB TO 'PLANNED' 3500 FT TO STAY CLR OF TCA AND AT THE SAME TIME TRIED TO GET THE XPONDER WORKING. BY RECYCLING SWITCHES AND TURNING OFF DME I GOT THE XPONDER REPLY LIGHT TO WORK AGAIN. DURING THE REPAIR PROCESS, I INADVERTENTLY ALLOWED ACFT TO CLB TO 4000 FT, 200 FT INTO TCA BASE ALT. I CALLED APCH FOR CLRNC INTO TCA AND WAS TOLD THAT I WAS ALREADY IN BUT THAT I WAS CLRED INTO THE TCA. FOR MY PART, I KNOW BETTER THAN TO ALLOW MINOR EQUIP PROBS TO INTERFERE WITH THE SAFE OP OF THE FLT. A PROB XPONDER IS A MINOR EQUIP PROB. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR: THE VAST LOAD OF MY EXPERIENCE LEVEL IS IN THE VERY CTLED IFR FLT OF AIRLINE OPS. MY CURRENT VFR EXPERIENCE IS LIMITED.
