Narrative:
Air carrier 1 wxy was cleared into position to hold on runway 31. Air carrier 2 xyab was operating in the vicinity of runway 25. I heard '...xy...cleared for takeoff' and started the throttles forward. At the same time, the captain acknowledged 'air carrier 1 wxy, cleared for takeoff.' nothing more was said on the radio until I began to rotate on the takeoff roll when the tower came up and warned us of traffic just airborne on runway 25. He (tower) then advised us that we had taken off without clearance. Both the captain and I had understood that we were cleared for takeoff and the captain acknowledged same with our call sign. We apparently heard what we expected to hear (clearance for takeoff) and the tower apparently heard what he expected to hear (acknowledgement for takeoff by air carrier 2 xyab). Both takeoffs were completed safely with no unusual maneuvering to avoid each other. Supplemental information from acn 233892: not unusual at dfw in same recovery hour to hear xyab, xybb, xycb, xydb, etc. It's possible both aircraft acknowledged simultaneously.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: 2 ACR ACFT, WITH SIMILAR SOUNDING CALL SIGNS, TOOK OFF SIMULTANEOUSLY ON CONVERGING RWYS.
Narrative: ACR 1 WXY WAS CLRED INTO POS TO HOLD ON RWY 31. ACR 2 XYAB WAS OPERATING IN THE VICINITY OF RWY 25. I HEARD '...XY...CLRED FOR TKOF' AND STARTED THE THROTTLES FORWARD. AT THE SAME TIME, THE CAPT ACKNOWLEDGED 'ACR 1 WXY, CLRED FOR TKOF.' NOTHING MORE WAS SAID ON THE RADIO UNTIL I BEGAN TO ROTATE ON THE TKOF ROLL WHEN THE TWR CAME UP AND WARNED US OF TFC JUST AIRBORNE ON RWY 25. HE (TWR) THEN ADVISED US THAT WE HAD TAKEN OFF WITHOUT CLRNC. BOTH THE CAPT AND I HAD UNDERSTOOD THAT WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF AND THE CAPT ACKNOWLEDGED SAME WITH OUR CALL SIGN. WE APPARENTLY HEARD WHAT WE EXPECTED TO HEAR (CLRNC FOR TKOF) AND THE TWR APPARENTLY HEARD WHAT HE EXPECTED TO HEAR (ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FOR TKOF BY ACR 2 XYAB). BOTH TKOFS WERE COMPLETED SAFELY WITH NO UNUSUAL MANEUVERING TO AVOID EACH OTHER. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 233892: NOT UNUSUAL AT DFW IN SAME RECOVERY HR TO HEAR XYAB, XYBB, XYCB, XYDB, ETC. IT'S POSSIBLE BOTH ACFT ACKNOWLEDGED SIMULTANEOUSLY.
