Narrative:
I was the first officer flying the ILS approach to runway 21L at dtw. We were inside the marker and cleared to land. The captain called 500 to minimums, nothing in sight. 400 to minimums, nothing in sight. 300 to minimums, I have ground contact. 200 to minimums, lights in sight. I transitioned to visual and as we got closer I saw a widebody transport which was either on the runway or on short final. (At that point I couldn't be sure due to poor visibility and blowing snow.) it was obvious that there was very shortly going to be a collision so I added power and began a climb and slight left turn away from the widebody transport. After I initiated the go around the tower controller said 'air carrier X go around, fly runway heading, maintain 3000 ft.' (of course we already had gone around or it would have been too late.) the widebody transport came on and said 'confirm air carrier Y, are we cleared into position and hold?' he must have seen us fly by. We were vectored back for another ILS and landed safely.

AFTER I INITIATED THE GAR THE TWR CTLR SAID 'ACR X GAR, FLY RWY HDG, MAINTAIN 3000 FT.' (OF COURSE WE ALREADY HAD GONE AROUND OR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO LATE.) THE WDB CAME ON AND SAID 'CONFIRM ACR Y, ARE WE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD?' HE MUST HAVE SEEN US FLY BY. WE WERE VECTORED BACK FOR ANOTHER ILS AND LANDED SAFELY.
