Narrative:

I asked for climb when I picked up ice. Possibly should have asked for lower earlier, but ice had stopped accumulating at 11000 ft and didn't realize I couldn't continue climb until after 12000 ft. Plane went immediately to mechanic to fix transponder, check horsepwr output and see if any heater ducts clogged. Plane is only a few hours out of annual and otherwise operating perfectly. When I realized I could not climb further as requested, I notified ATC but we were both unreadable to each other. I went back to last known frequency, 118.9 bakersfield, which was loud and clear.

Title: SMA TWIN UNABLE TO COMPLY WITH CLB CLRNC ON ACCOUNT OF ICING.

Narrative: I ASKED FOR CLB WHEN I PICKED UP ICE. POSSIBLY SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR LOWER EARLIER, BUT ICE HAD STOPPED ACCUMULATING AT 11000 FT AND DIDN'T REALIZE I COULDN'T CONTINUE CLB UNTIL AFTER 12000 FT. PLANE WENT IMMEDIATELY TO MECH TO FIX XPONDER, CHK HORSEPWR OUTPUT AND SEE IF ANY HEATER DUCTS CLOGGED. PLANE IS ONLY A FEW HRS OUT OF ANNUAL AND OTHERWISE OPERATING PERFECTLY. WHEN I REALIZED I COULD NOT CLB FURTHER AS REQUESTED, I NOTIFIED ATC BUT WE WERE BOTH UNREADABLE TO EACH OTHER. I WENT BACK TO LAST KNOWN FREQ, 118.9 BAKERSFIELD, WHICH WAS LOUD AND CLR.
