Narrative:
While flying the salt lake 3 departure we spent our time looking at the crossing altitude once past the VOR, and missed that aircraft on easterly rtes must wait for radar vectors out of 11000 ft due to mountains east. After approximately a 45 degree east to turn to our filed route the controller advised and we turned back north to continue SID. Would like to see bold print of some sort to make the remark about radar east out of 11000 ft MSL more noticeable. The controller said there was no problem. Supplemental information from acn 235584: runways 32 and 34L/right section: fly a 340 degree heading, maintain 8000 ft. Aircraft filed courses 331 degrees clockwise through 109 degrees, cross 7.5 DME arc north of slc VOR at 8000 ft, thence: expect vectors to assigned route of flight. Expect clearance to filed altitude 10 mins after departure. As I looked at this I mistakenly thought that after 8000 ft north of the VORTAC within 7.5 DME I was cleared to turn on course because of the clearance stating after the 'SID' and 8000 ft we were cleared as filed. However, I overlooked section a special instructions. Also at the bottom of the SID is the statement: this is a radar vector departure to assigned altitude. I felt a bit fatigued at the time. We also had late arriving freight. To say the least there was a lot of activity in the cockpit.
