Narrative:
Air carrier X on J42 level FL330 air carrier Y at FL350 direct gve. When lateral separation was established I cleared air carrier Y to FL330. I had several action vectors and told air carrier Y. 'If you were on a heading cleared direct bkw.' he responded, I believe we're going direct bkw now. I meant to say gve but mis-spoke. I noticed air carrier Y north of expect course and turned him 15 degrees right. I later turned him to 120 heading and air carrier X to a 060 heading. Supplemental information from acn 236615: air carrier Y was RNAV direct gve. Air carrier Y was told 'if you were left on a heading, cleared direct bkw.' pilot responded 'I think we're doing that already, direct bkw.' air carrier Y never corrected his statement. Air carrier X 6 mi off the aircraft's left wing then became in conflict.
