Narrative:
Level cruise sbound on J-79 at FL350, 84 DME north hpw VOR -- TCASII indicated a TA and almost immediately, an RA, then a 'climb' instruction. Intruder appeared on TCASII screen at 2 O'clock position and at a 0 altitude differential. Autoplt was disengaged and a climb established to approximately 35700 by me. The first officer informed ATC of our maneuver and of the traffic TCASII RA warning. Controller appeared as surprised as we. When asked the specifics of that aircraft, the controller indicated he would have to check on it, but thought it was probably one 'launched' out of patuxent. He later (about 2 mins) said it was an fgt out of patuxent. The intruder was very fast and appeared to make a left turn behind us. First officer saw the aircraft, probably only because his contrail was very evident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MLG CLBED IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII COMMAND CAUSED BY A HIGH PERFORMANCE CLB OF AN FGT.
Narrative: LEVEL CRUISE SBOUND ON J-79 AT FL350, 84 DME N HPW VOR -- TCASII INDICATED A TA AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, AN RA, THEN A 'CLB' INSTRUCTION. INTRUDER APPEARED ON TCASII SCREEN AT 2 O'CLOCK POS AND AT A 0 ALT DIFFERENTIAL. AUTOPLT WAS DISENGAGED AND A CLB ESTABLISHED TO APPROX 35700 BY ME. THE FO INFORMED ATC OF OUR MANEUVER AND OF THE TFC TCASII RA WARNING. CTLR APPEARED AS SURPRISED AS WE. WHEN ASKED THE SPECIFICS OF THAT ACFT, THE CTLR INDICATED HE WOULD HAVE TO CHK ON IT, BUT THOUGHT IT WAS PROBABLY ONE 'LAUNCHED' OUT OF PATUXENT. HE LATER (ABOUT 2 MINS) SAID IT WAS AN FGT OUT OF PATUXENT. THE INTRUDER WAS VERY FAST AND APPEARED TO MAKE A L TURN BEHIND US. FO SAW THE ACFT, PROBABLY ONLY BECAUSE HIS CONTRAIL WAS VERY EVIDENT.
