Narrative:
On taxi for departure, received instructions to taxi on txwys right, C for intersection departure (no intersection specified) and a runway hold that I thought was runway 28R (sfo international). Asked for clarification on intersection for departure and acknowledged hold for runway 28R. Ground specified intersection 'east' departure and did not respond to my hold acknowledgement on runway 28R. I acknowledged intersection 'east' and again asked for confirmation on hold for runway 28R. No response from ground control. Taxi to runway 28R. Hold on taxiway right. Ground control asked why I did not hold for runway 28L as specified. I responded that I thought hold was runway 28R, not runway 28L. Note: taxiway right does not cross runway 28L (although it does cross extended centerline west of runway 28L). Several air carrier planes were crossing runway 28L at the time. Probable causes: failure of myself to understand initial instructions. Failure of ground control to correct my readback (on 2 occasions). Confusions over a hold where taxiway did not cross the runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PVT SMA PLT HAD DIFFICULTY WITH IMPROPER GND CTL INSTRUCTIONS AND MAY HAVE CROSSED A RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: ON TAXI FOR DEP, RECEIVED INSTRUCTIONS TO TAXI ON TXWYS R, C FOR INTXN DEP (NO INTXN SPECIFIED) AND A RWY HOLD THAT I THOUGHT WAS RWY 28R (SFO INTL). ASKED FOR CLARIFICATION ON INTXN FOR DEP AND ACKNOWLEDGED HOLD FOR RWY 28R. GND SPECIFIED INTXN 'E' DEP AND DID NOT RESPOND TO MY HOLD ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ON RWY 28R. I ACKNOWLEDGED INTXN 'E' AND AGAIN ASKED FOR CONFIRMATION ON HOLD FOR RWY 28R. NO RESPONSE FROM GND CTL. TAXI TO RWY 28R. HOLD ON TXWY R. GND CTL ASKED WHY I DID NOT HOLD FOR RWY 28L AS SPECIFIED. I RESPONDED THAT I THOUGHT HOLD WAS RWY 28R, NOT RWY 28L. NOTE: TXWY R DOES NOT CROSS RWY 28L (ALTHOUGH IT DOES CROSS EXTENDED CTRLINE W OF RWY 28L). SEVERAL ACR PLANES WERE XING RWY 28L AT THE TIME. PROBABLE CAUSES: FAILURE OF MYSELF TO UNDERSTAND INITIAL INSTRUCTIONS. FAILURE OF GND CTL TO CORRECT MY READBACK (ON 2 OCCASIONS). CONFUSIONS OVER A HOLD WHERE TXWY DID NOT CROSS THE RWY.
