Narrative:
On mar/tue/93, I left with a student on an instrument cross country to newberry port/plum island, ma. I called flight service and received a standard WX briefing for the flight. I did, however, fail to ask for any class ii NOTAMS. As it turns out, they had closed the airport 2 weeks earlier because of snow banks along the runway. Since the time of closure, the snow banks melted. However, because of the limited use of the airport during the winter months, the airport manager did not reopen the airport. The first time I realized the airport was actually closed was when I was receiving a briefing for the return trip. That is when flight service told me of the closure. ATC never mentioned the closure to me going or coming from the airport. The airport's snow banks were not any higher than 12 inches high when I landed and the landing was uneventful. The runway did not have an 'X' on it as well!
