Narrative:
At FL370, mach .80 in stabilized cruise, I received a message on the FMS CDU stating 'flap limit speed.' I also noticed the speed scale on the ADI change, from white to yellow, several times. The autothrottles retarded power in attempt to slow the aircraft below flap limit speed. I was advised by a flight attendant that there was a 'banging' noise in the wing area. The autothrottles were disconnected and speed stabilized at 245 KTS. There were no other indications, i.e., hydraulic or confign. I sent the first officer back to check on the noise and he confirmed a rumbling or banging noise. Since we had 3 hours remaining to seattle, I elected to land at mci. The landing was uneventful and nothing was found. The FMS was 'reseated' and the flight continued uneventfully.

Title: PRECAUTIONARY LNDG MADE IN DIVERSION TO ALTERNATE ARPT WITH ACFT EQUIP PROB.
Narrative: AT FL370, MACH .80 IN STABILIZED CRUISE, I RECEIVED A MESSAGE ON THE FMS CDU STATING 'FLAP LIMIT SPD.' I ALSO NOTICED THE SPD SCALE ON THE ADI CHANGE, FROM WHITE TO YELLOW, SEVERAL TIMES. THE AUTOTHROTTLES RETARDED PWR IN ATTEMPT TO SLOW THE ACFT BELOW FLAP LIMIT SPD. I WAS ADVISED BY A FLT ATTENDANT THAT THERE WAS A 'BANGING' NOISE IN THE WING AREA. THE AUTOTHROTTLES WERE DISCONNECTED AND SPD STABILIZED AT 245 KTS. THERE WERE NO OTHER INDICATIONS, I.E., HYD OR CONFIGN. I SENT THE FO BACK TO CHK ON THE NOISE AND HE CONFIRMED A RUMBLING OR BANGING NOISE. SINCE WE HAD 3 HRS REMAINING TO SEATTLE, I ELECTED TO LAND AT MCI. THE LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL AND NOTHING WAS FOUND. THE FMS WAS 'RESEATED' AND THE FLT CONTINUED UNEVENTFULLY.
